Is ChatGPT naming you? How to check in 5 minutes

Short answer: Open ChatGPT logged out, ask the question your buyers would ask, and repeat it in five fresh chats. Write down whether you were named, how many times out of five, and who was named instead. That takes about five minutes for one question, and it tells you more than any single answer can.

Why you can't just ask once

ChatGPT doesn't give the same answer every time. A SparkToro study published in January 2026 had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI 2,961 times. The odds of getting the same list of brands twice were under 1 in 100. The odds of the same list in the same order were about 1 in 1,000.

Some brands still came up again and again, even when their place in the list moved around. So the useful question is how often you get named, not where you rank in one answer.

We see the same in our own weekly runs. Asked about payroll software for a 100-person US company, ChatGPT gave the same five names in all five asks. Asked about real estate CRMs in Dubai, two brands came up every time while others, such as Pixxi and REM, came up in only one of five.

The 5-minute check, step by step

1. Write the question your buyer would type. Use their words, not your marketing words. Include what they're buying, who it's for and where. "What's the best HR software for a 50-person company in the UK?" is a real buyer question. "Who is the leading people platform?" is not.

2. Open ChatGPT logged out. Use a private or incognito window so your own chat history and settings don't shape the answer. If you'd rather stay logged in, OpenAI's help page says a Temporary Chat set to unpersonalized does not use memory or custom instructions.

3. Ask the question five times, in a fresh chat each time. Don't ask follow-ups and don't hint at your brand. Copy and paste the same wording each time.

4. Write down four things after each answer:

  • Were you named? Yes or no.
  • Which other brands were named?
  • Which sources or links did the answer show, if any?
  • Did it describe you correctly: right product, right market, right buyer?

5. Add it up. Count how many of the five answers named you, and do the same for each competitor. A simple table is enough:

Brand Named (of 5)
Competitor A 5
Competitor B 4
You 1

That's one question done. If you have time, repeat it for two or three more questions your buyers ask, such as one about price or one for a different market.

How to read what you get

Named in 5 of 5. You're part of the core answer for that question. Check that the description is right, then test nearby questions.

Named in 1 to 4 of 5. You're on the edge. ChatGPT knows you, but other brands are a safer pick for it. This is the most common place to gain ground.

Named in 0 of 5. For that question, buyers who ask ChatGPT don't hear about you. Look at who was named instead and where those brands show up online.

Being well known is no guarantee. In our UK HR software run, BrightHR, Ciphr, Cezanne and PayFit were never named in five asks, while Breathe, Sage HR and HiBob were named every time. In our US payroll run, Paylocity, Paycom, Paycor, Justworks and OnPay never came up.

Look at the sources, not only the names

When ChatGPT searches the web, its answer shows the sources it used. These are worth a click. They're often "best X" round-up lists and the brands' own websites.

In our runs, the brands named most often were on most of the round-ups we checked. In the UK, Breathe was on 12 of the 13 HR software lists we found. They also had pages of their own saying, in plain words, who they're for and where they work. We cover those patterns in Why ChatGPT recommends your competitors and not you.

What this quick check can't tell you

Five asks give you a fair first read, not a precise score. The SparkToro study suggests running a prompt at least 60 to 100 times to get a steady visibility percentage. So treat a 2 of 5 as "sometimes", not as a hard 40%.

A few other limits are worth knowing:

  • Answers change over time, so a check today is a snapshot. Repeat it every month or so.
  • Different buyers phrase the same need in very different ways. Test more than one wording.
  • ChatGPT is only one assistant. Buyers also use Google's AI answers, Perplexity and others, and they don't always agree.

FAQ

How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my brand? Ask ChatGPT the question your buyers would ask, logged out, in five fresh chats. Count how many answers name you and who they name instead.

Why does ChatGPT give a different answer each time? It generates each answer fresh, so the brands and their order can shift between chats. SparkToro found less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same list twice.

Should I track my ranking position in ChatGPT? Not on its own. The order moves around a lot. How often you're named across several asks is a steadier measure.

How often should I check? About once a month for your main buyer questions, and again after you publish anything that should change the answer.
